Secret History of EL Comics 7

The title to this issue of the Funtastic Four, "Let’s destroy," marks the first time EL Comics has put its creative philosophy into a two-word manifesto. That’s exactly what the company sets out to do to the world of comics, predating the Sex Pistols with the idea that a medium needs to be torn down before it can be built up into something with more power. How can an art form have a sturdy edifice when the old foundations creak and bend?
EL seems to be saying that you can’t build the new from the old and has set about making sure the old is pummeled into the ground, leveled to such a degree that there is fresh dirt from which to begin building.
For all these reasons, the question begs — is EL represented by the alien, an unseen enemy to the comic book mainstream, caught off guard by an attack of aesthetic purity? And has there ever been so bold a business move as casting yourself as the villain in a parable?
EL was clearly not business as usual.
