Secret History of EL Comics 13

EL returns to its science fiction roots with an ill-fated endeavor, The Phantom Zone, which not only shifts the action away from superheroes, which some factions in the company found as trendy, preferring the more reliable and long term story elements involving rocket ships and extra dimensions, but also takes away the soap opera style personal elements that were on display in the Funtastic Four. It’s as if the creators were saying that the story is about the story, not the individuals, and to that effect, most of the action takes place outside the craft, with one single panel devoted to an unnamed crew member panicking. Perhaps that is the ultimate message — people panic, rockets don’t. Regardless, the stance wasn’t as sturdy as those factions in EL believed and, soon enough, they were back to superheroes that subverted the mainstream.
