Secret History of EL Comics 15
EL mixes their science fiction interests with their superhero experiments to unleash a rather low key effort in Captain Cosmic. The first issue is lost to the ages — the story of how Captain Cosmic became a costumed spaceman and who he is exactly might never be known — but this second issue at least gives some indication of the way EL was thinking in future projects.
The entire enterprise seems a little begrudging — the superhero action is mundane, second place to the wonder offered by the exploration of space and another planet. The EL creators are screaming loud and clear that fantasy is no match for the wonders of reality and sets out to prove so by placing a super powered being as a minuscule portion of a wider panel featuring the marvels of the universe.
Sadly, though EL would continue to explore the science fiction vein, as we all know now, it was the superhero genre in which they excelled. Space adventures were obviously where their hearts lied and even though there were no more issues of Captain Cosmic to appear, the company would not give up so easily.
