Doctor Who ends its 4th series . . . it rocks

Well, I’m going to speak casually and bluntly about the fourth series of Doctor Who, so if there is anyone out there who fears spoilers from the finale, then step back now . . . don’t click that you want to read more.

Ah, free to speak.

Well, that rocked. That whole season rocked. This was my favorite since the Eccleston series — it was a perfect mix of corny stuff and science fiction excitement. Catherine Tate as Donna Noble swiftly became one of my favorite companions and ably got rid of the romantic air that had been infecting the series — to its detriment I believe — and brought back what this series is really supposed to be about — traveling through time and space and fighting monsters. Seriously, that’s all it’s about. Nothing lofty.

Unlike the previous two series which could get waaaaaaay serious and dark (not always to a bad end, but it could be quite tiresome), this series kept an even tone so that even the emotional finale had a lighter tone than ever on the series. It was wonderfully done and in the fate of Donna flirted with the concept of second chances and the ability of a person to change themselves and not need someone to do it for them. To give it away — she saves the universe, sacrifices her humanity, and the Doctor has to wipe her memory to save her life. The point is that Donna always had it in her to be great, but it only came out with the Doctor in tow. NOW is Donna’s chance to learn it herself, though with the guidance of her grandfather and mother, who now realize her potential.

Great stuff.

Also great fun turns by all the companions — including Mickey and Jackie! — and anything Sarah Jane Smith touches is gold in my eyes. A fairy tale ending is included and a bit of vicious darkness with a plot turn — two Doctors! — that serves as a great plot device to have the Doctor do things he never could do while still have “our Doctor” remain true.

Couldn’t have asked for a better year of fun TV.

What next? Well the specials — yay David Morrissey! — but more importantly, The Brig will actually be guest-starring on Sarah Jane, which is pretty big news. That will be excellent.
