john and i are playing around with some little folks that will be acting as narrators for The Food Book. so far we’ve come up with these…

i like them all, but will be coming up with more before we make our final decision. this is fun!
This fall we discovered a rabbit living in our wildflower patch. He completely surprised me and i’m afraid i frightened him with my shouts. I hope he’s hibernating in a hole underneath the lupines and that we’ll see him again next year. And i hope he’s wearing overalls and a stripey turtleneck.

our kids are 12 this year. this summer vacation has been very different. in previous years, when we’re not out and about, our 2 kids were upstairs in their room playing with action figures, drawing pictures, working on their complex imaginary stories. this year, they’re upstairs in their room… rocking. harry’s on electric guitar, hugo is on his keyboard mixing his brothers sounds with loops on garage band. they rock all day, dont want to come down for anything (c’mon guys… ice cream!”) and stay up til midnight rocking. when we go to the farm to pick up our milk and eggs, theyre recording the sound of rocks hitting the tin silo to use in their songs.
yesterday we heard some lame-ass metal song while doing some internet research for making our own bass. harry said, “mom, is this hard rock, heavy metal or punk?” i pointed out the relentless guitar solo. he said, “metal, right?” then he said, “punk doesnt believe in solos, right?” i agreed and he said, “thats why i stopped doing them.”
there are few times when i’ve been so completely sure that i’ve done a good job as a parent.
(take that, andy.)
